TAKE ACTION

Bring a Peer Run Respite To Seattle

We have created a petition advocating for a peer run respite in King County/Seattle.

A peer run respite is a house that people with mental health issues can stay overnight anywhere from 1 to 13 nights and is supported by peer workers who have also at some point faced mental health challenges. The respite is voluntary, non-coercive, self-directed, and supports a person in learning wellness skills and creating a plan with resources and supports to continue their wellness journey after leaving the respite. These peer run respites are in many states across the United States. Studies and people who have used the peer run respites show that non-coercion and self-direction have better outcomes for people's long term wellness.

Your voice and support are important and needed. Signing our peer run respite advocacy petition is a great way to show your support. Thank you!

Help spread the word to get more signatures by sending the peer run respite petition to others. Thank you!

STOP THE MURPHY BILL HR2646

HR 2646 is a piece of mental health legislation currently in the House energy and commerce committee. If passed, it will promote coercion, segregation, the removal of patient’s rights and a one dimensional scope of mental health care. Thanks to efforts made by mental health advocates, disability advocates and others Tim Murphy has been forced to revise his original bill. Unfortunately, the new Murphy Bill still contains many provisions that are a detriment to Americans who are diagnosed with mental illness.

Here are four quick and easy things you can do:

1) Write or call your Congressman:

4) Contact the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and demand they change their position on HR 2646

Healing Voices Documentary

HEALING VOICES explores the experience commonly labeled as ‘psychosis’ through the stories of real-life individuals, and asks the question: What are we talking about when we talk about ‘mental illness’? The film follows three subjects – Oryx, Jen and Dan – over nearly five years, and features interviews with notable international experts including Robert Whitaker, Dr. Bruce Levine, Celia Brown, Will Hall, Dr. Marius Romme, and others, on the history of psychiatry and the rise of the ‘medical model’ of mental illness.

We showed the movie April 28, 2016 in Seattle, WA. Stayed tuned for more showings in Seattle. Check out their website for showings in other areas, show the movie in your area and for more information about the movie:
